Southeastern Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchisee Association

Our mission

To form meaningful connections amongst KFC franchisees of the Southeast Region and our valued business partners.  Our goal is to educate, develop, and unite our members to the benefit of the franchisees and the KFC Brand.

Our history

Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchisees have always been a family. We are related not only because our business has the same founder, Colonel Harland Sanders, but also because we learned to depend upon each other from the very beginning. In the early days it was very common for fellow Franchisees to help one another with new restaurant openings.

After the Colonel sold Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1964, the common bonds uniting Franchisees became stronger.  We discovered many years ago that cooperation and communication among Franchisees were essential to continue the dream of Colonel Harland Sanders.

The Southeastern Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchisee Association was founded in 1965.  Its first formal meeting was in May of 1966 with 23 members in attendance.  From this historic beginning, the Southeastern  Association has grown to include over 60 Franchisee Members and over 70 Institutional Members. Southeastern Franchisees operate over 1200 Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants in the 10 states of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia.  The Southeastern Association remains a premiere forum for the communication of business concerns in the Kentucky Fried Chicken system, and a foundation of Franchisee strength, unity, and success.

Our People

PAST

Past leaders of the SEKFCFA made tremendous contributions to the KFC system.  Bonny Shelton, a former KFC franchisee and Secretary/Treasurer of the SEKFCFA, receives her diploma for Fried Chicken University from Colonel Sanders.  Bonny was in the KFC business for 57 years and served as Secretary/Treasurer for the SE for 46 years!  She still attends meetings as Secretary Emeritus.

PRESENT

The SEKFCFA franchisees are a diverse mix of multi-generation operators and new investors, families and corporations, one unit and multi-unit organizations.  The SEKFCFA serves the needs of all these members. Tom Broome (pictured here with wife, Beth) is the President of Scottish Foods, a multi-unit, multi-brand family-owned organization.  Tom is a current NCAC representative and served as Vice-Chair of that committee for 7 years.

FUTURE

Providing leadership and development opportunities is one way the SEKFCFA enhances the capabilities of its members.   Austin Felker, a 3rd generation franchisee, is an up and coming leader in the KFC system.  Austin has served as the Southeast representative to Government Affairs since 2018.  He now Chairs the Government Affairs Committee and serves as Treasurer for the AKFCF.

Our brand

It all began with the man, the myth, the legend himself. In 1930, in a humble service station in Corbin, Kentucky, 40-year old Harland Sanders began feeding hungry travellers. Sanders spent the next nine years (now that's dedication) perfecting his secret blend of 11 herbs and spices, as well as the basic cooking technique we still use today. There are now over 24,000 KFC outlets in more than 145 countries and territories around the world.
